BULLOCK FIELD HILL, FIRST PLANTING WEEKEND, FEBRUARY 2024
Our story
We are a group of friends who, over dinner in early 2022, were discussing the climate crisis, and what we could do, together, to make a difference. We love trees, and we began to talk about buying some land and making a woodland together.
Between us we had some of the knowledge needed, but exactly where to find the land and what would be involved was at the time sketchy. We knew though, in these times of environmental gloom and doom, why this seemed like a good idea.
Woodland is a fantastic carbon sink and provides diverse habitats that are so desperately needed.
That was the start of our journey. We then set up a not-for-profit company to deliver our new woodland creation project.
Now we are well underway doing something tangible that will have a positive impact on the environment.
We have the power to impact our future, and we’re doing something about it

Why are we doing this?
We want to do what we can to address the climate and nature crisis.
By planting new woodland, we are:
Sequestering carbon
Every hectare of broadleaf woodland will store between between 300 and 350 tonnes of carbon over a 100-year period, according to the Woodland Trust. This is about 25 years of one person’s footprint in the UK.
Creating Habitats
New woodland will support a range of flora and fauna: bees, butterflies, and bluebells but also insects, moths and fungi.
Taking Action
Getting our hands dirty and enabling others to get involved – we can all make a difference.
Our woodland project
The land
A gently sloping, south facing 3.5 hectare field in west Somerset bordered on two sides by existing woodland.
The team
We’re a group of friends with shared concerns who instigated the Wood Could Should project in early 2002.
The Proposal
Our plan incorporates some of the latest thinking on woodland creation while responding to our unique site.
The timeline
Key moments in our woodland project from our launch in March 2022, through planning, planting and maintenance.
